Loose The Technology
Love the iphone? Then you should read this post!
Now, I have never owned an iphone and I don’t intend to. Yes, there are millions of ‘apps’ to choose from, and you can email whilst sitting on the toilet, climbing a tree, or while dangling from scaffolding at hundreds of feet, but is that really a good thing? Like the writer of the aforementioned post remarks, what happens when you want some time off? And that’s the point. As long as you have a piece of technology in your hand which is capable of being reached by anyone with a computer at their disposal—which is now everyone, including small children—you are locked in to work mode. The days of cruising around with a mustache and a filo-fax, cut off from communication, have been and gone. From now on you are permanently buckled in, and it can drive you crazy…
Personally, I see nothing wrong with owning a very basic phone which does just what phone’s are supposed to: allows you to make phone-calls and text. OK, so when I get home there are emails waiting for me, but so what? I’d rather have my free time free and get away from work full stop. Just because everyone else is constantly connected doesn’t mean that the world will fall apart if I am not, does it?
Well–here’s the thing: if you are self-employed it is a very fine line. And with an iphone in your hand you won’t miss that all important client. So I think it’s a case of being strict with yourself. Yes, reply to emails while you are having time off, but leave it at that. It takes some will-power to do this but trust me, I know a few people who are using their email less on the move and it’s done wonders for their powers of social communication.
