Tips For Growing Your Own Tomato Plants

Everyone loves the taste of sweet tomatoes. Plump and juicy as they burst in your mouth while eating salads and sandwiches. The good thing about growing tomatoes is they are one of the easier plants to grow. Nevertheless, having some basic tips to follow will always help.

When planting tomatoes, it is important to plant them deep. The deeper the better. This will establish a strong root system which is important when growing tomatoes. This will allow the stem to grow both from the bottom and sides of stem making them stronger to support the plant itself.

If you decide to buy your tomato plants for transplanting rather than by seeds, should you buy the taller plants. You will need to cut off the leaves on the plant leaving the top few intact. Like the seeds, the plant itself will need to be planted deep into the soil; deep enough so that only the leaves are showing. Leave a well surrounding it up to about a foot deep. You will be taking off the leaves as they form while the plant grows and pushing more soil around the stem until it is full.

In addition to this, you must keep your tomato plant watered daily. Tomato plants need water to stay healthy as well as adequate sunlight. A good temperature for your plants is around 85 degrees during the daytime.

If you are growing your tomato plants indoors, you will need special grow lights. These are not the usual fluorescent lamps but metal halide high intensity lamps which provide enough UV rays for your plants. You should provide your plants with 18 hours daily of lighting to ensure optimum growth.

Make sure that you have sufficient storage space for all those tomatoes that you’re going to be having! Good luck!
